Kronos Quartet

For 40 years, the Kronos Quartet - David Harrington, John Sherba (violins), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello) - has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually re-imagining the string quartet experience. Kronos covers a very broad range of musical genres: Mexican folk, experimental, pre-classical early music, movie soundtracks (Requiem for a Dream, Heat, The Fountain), jazz and tango. Kronos has also recorded adaptations of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", Sigur Rós's "Flugufrelsarinn", Television's "Marquee Moon", Raymond Scott's "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals", and Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right". Kronos has also worked with a variety of global musicians.

To those that "get" her, Anderson is unquestionably a genius; one of the greatest musicians and performance artists of our age. To those who don't, she is an enigma. Sometimes producing work of genuine passion and beauty; at others appearing to be a bit of a chancer whose pretensions are frequently allowed to go unchallenged.
Landfall does little to settle the argument one way or the other. It opened gently, with the excellent Kronos Quartet exchanging hypnotic themes and melodies with occasional bursts from Anderson's electric violin. It wasn't particularly challenging, but it was none the worse for that, as its simplicity and repetition helped create a mood of contemplation. A mood that was rather broken the moment Anderson added her own spoken narrative, some of which was back-projected on to a screen in a series of random text and fonts devoid of any punctuation...

Silent Cranes

About Silent Cranes, Kouyoumdjian writes:
“April 24, 2015 marks the centennial of the Armenian Genocide, a tragic event that led to the mass extermination of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Turks that was the first genocide of the 20th century. While over 20 countries and 43 U.S. States have formally recognized the Armenian Genocide, modern-day Turkey has yet to do so and threatens imprisonment to those who push the topic within its borders. Even now, 100 years later, this historic event continues to be just as unresolved as it was before. As an Armenian-American composer who values freedom of speech and whose family fled the genocide, I feel this is an essential time to remember those who were lost, while continuing a dialogue about what happened and how we can prevent further genocides from happening in the future.
“Silent Cranes is inspired by the Armenian folk song Groung (Crane) in which the singer calls out to the migratory bird, begging for word from their homeland, only to have the crane respond with silence and fly away. The first, second, and fourth movement titles quote directly from the folk song lyrics. Those who were lost during the genocide are cranes in their own way, unable to speak of the horrors that happened, and it is the responsibility of the living to give them a voice.

Kronos Quartet Beyond Zero: 1914-1918

“Unlike official histories, that have often romanticized and glorified the war, artists have typically been the keepers of sanity, showing its brutality, destruction, and ugliness. For many, across history, creating art in those circumstances served as a survival mechanism.
While working on Beyond Zero: 1914–1918, I was inspired by anti-war writings, music, and art created during and immediately after World War I, including, for example, the writings of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, the music of Satie and Debussy, and the Dada movement. The piece draws from their disillusionment about heroism and patriotism, summed up in Owen’s line from Dulce et Decorum, that to die for one’s country is the old lie.

Kronos Quartet / Kimmo Pohjonen / Samuli Kosminen - Uniko

UNIKO is the collaboration between the Kronos Quartet and Finnish duo, accordion adventurer Kimmo Pohjonen and sampling guru Samuli Kosminen. Commissioned by Kronos, UNIKO received its world premiere at the Helsinki Festival in 2004, with additional performances in Moscow, Molde (Norway) and in New York at the 2007 BAM NEXT WAVE Festival with three sold out performances. The album was recorded at Avatar Studios in NYC following the BAM concerts. Producer is Iceland’s Valgeir Sigurðsson, known for his work with Björk and other outstanding, adventurous artists.
UNIKO is highlighted by Pohjonen’s electrified and MIDI-fied accordion with Kosminen’s electronic percussion devices which reproduce his own accordion samples and his samples of Kronos’ instruments. These samples, together with live strings and electric accordion plus effects and manipulations create a new, multi-dimensional sound world.

Bartók Béla Nemzeti Hangversenyterem. Kimmo Pohjonen - harmonika, ének, Samuli Kosminen - samplerek.
